Stibnite (Sb2S3) and stibiconite (Sb3+Sb25+O6(OH)) were the only minerals mined in Arkansas for this metal. Stibnite is steel-gray, has a relatively high specific gravity (4.6), a metallic luster, and often forms slender prismatic crystals that may have a curved habit. Stibiconite is an earthy yellow oxide formed by the weathering of stibnite.

· Crystal Structure of Stibnite. Stibnite is a compound of antimony (Sb) and sulfur (S), with the formula Sb 2 S 3. Stibnite is a member of the orthorhombic system, often occurring as long, prismatic 4-sided crystals with pyramidal terminations at each end. Crystals may be quite large, often resembling swords.
Stibnite. White Caps mine, Manhattan district, Nye county, Nevada. 5 x 6.5 cm 168g. $30.00. A group of crystals that were covered with calcite. When I etched the calcite away, the crystals are exposed as seen. Most of them sticking above the calcite that was there are broken off.

Stibnite crystals have apparently been collected from Jerritt Canyon mines for many years, but, incredibly, few were saved from the crusher. The first mines were open pit mines, and a stibnite of a foot to a foot and a half in length was reportedly collected in the West Generator pit and used as a door stop for many years (Joe Kantor 1999).
Stibnite is named after the latin stibium, which is the old name of the element antimony (Sb). Stibnite was and continues to be the primary ore of antimony. Stibnite forms some of the most outstanding natural crystals that exist, in way of sharpness, luster, and size can form in groups of huge metallic lustered crystals that are elegantly crafted and exceptionally shiny.

Stibnite Meanings, Zodiacs, Planets, Elements, Colors, Chakras, and more. Stibnite, also known as Antimonite, is an antimony sulfide mineral that crystallizes in the forms of masses, but is most commonly known when seen in it''s semi-rare, long prismatic crystal structure. These long, tubular crystals can be seen ranging from a few inches, to a few feet.
Stibnite is the most important ore of antimony. It is an opaque, metallic mineral that forms fine crystal clusters with long straight or curved individual crystals growing out in many divergent directions.

stibnite Ichinokawa Mine, Iyo, Japan Stibnite crystal groups from the Ichinokawa Mine, Japan are found in mineral museums all over the world. The crystals are large, sharp, bright metallic gray, strongly striated and very well-formed. The best specimens from this mine were found in the 1880''s.
The specimen is very well balanced, and I particularly like seeing the stibnite on a solid (non-stibnite) matrix. Even among the endless specimens from China, seeing an isolated stibnite crystal on a "matrix" that is not just more stibnite is highly unusual-- and if you do see a matrix, then a stibnite will likely be a cluster of small crystals.
· In the ore district, stibnite is usually well-crystallized. Especially at shallow levels, the early-stage stibnite usually takes a needle-like or radial shape, and some crystals can reach more than tens of centimeters in length. It is untenable for such well-developed mineral crystals to be presented in SEDEX ore deposits.
